Billing
Frequently Asked Questions
How should I explain PeaceHealth Laboratories’ billing to my patients?
Many patients are used to paying for laboratory services separately from the physicians’ charges. Let your patient know that you will be sending the sample to PeaceHealth Laboratories, and PeaceHealth Laboratories will bill for its services after it has received payment from the patient’s insurance.
How does PeaceHealth Laboratories handle billing for PtProtect?
As always, PeaceHealth Laboratories will bill all commercial insurance plans, workers compensation carriers, motor vehicle accident plans, government plans including Medicare, and select State Medical Assistance Programs. We’re in-network with an array of West Coast insurance carriers (see Payers list), so billing is easy and efficient. We’ll work directly with your patient to resolve any issues that may develop related to paying for PtProtect.
When will you bill my patient?
The patient will be billed after insurance has responded to the laboratory and will only be billed for the portion the insurance carrier reports as “patient responsibility.” Patients will be responsible for their portion, whether it is a co-pay or deductible.
As a participating provider in an insurance plan, PeaceHealth Laboratories is required to follow rules outlined in our contract. PeaceHealth Laboratories will bill the contracted insurance and post any payment and/or contractual write offs to the patient’s account.

What if my patient is with a non-contracted carrier?
PeaceHealth Laboratories will also bill non-contracted insurances. As a non-contracted provider, there are no adjustments or write-offs for the difference between what we charge and what the insurance allows. The patient is responsible for the balance after the claim has been processed. If the payment is sent directly to the laboratory, it will be posted to the patient’s account before PeaceHealth Laboratories issues a first billing to the patient.
What about self-pay patients?
PeaceHealth Laboratories will attempt to collect on all self-pay accounts. Each time the patient is seen, a new invoice number is established. Invoices billed as self-pay indicate the patient may qualify for a prompt pay discount. Balances must be paid in full within 90 days of the service date to qualify. Our Patient Accounts Team can also assist your patients to establish a short-term payment plan.
